Marketing Strategist Position Description

Reports To: Principal

Works with: Principal, project managers, designers, programmers, development, account
service, content writer, SEO manager; regularly engaged in client and vendor conversations

Key Quantifiable Indicators: College-level degree in communications, business, public
relations, marketing; 5-7 years of professional service experience with an emphasis on account management, strategic plan development, budget management and project management; excellent oral and written skills; word processing skills essential; familiarity with web technologies (content management systems, social media tools, blogs, etc.) a plus.

Position Summary: The Marketing Strategist is tasked with client communication, account
management, vendor communication, strategic plan development (to include conducting research, making marketing recommendations and creating media plans) and developing account opportunities. This key role is vital for client satisfaction, project efficiency, team unity and, ultimately, the longevity of the client relationship. North Star thrives on referrals from satisfied clients; the Marketing Strategist directly influences the client’s willingness to say good things about his or her experience with our firm, or to leave dissatisfied and detract from our shared success. Excellent account service will result in wider and deeper client relationships. The health of these relationships not only advances the firm’s mission, but also creates growth opportunities for NSM team members.

Responsible for:

  • Strategic engagement with clients to provide high-level marketing recommendations
  • Development of annual strategic plan deliverables including some or all of the following:
      • Secondary (online) research
      • Primary research – conducting surveys and focus groups
      • Data analysis
      • Objective planning
      • Media planning
      • Budgeting
      • Report writing
      • Formal presentations
  • Proposal writing and review for house accounts
  • Developing creative briefs and communicating strategic objectives to internal team members to ensure projects are completed in alignment with strategy
  • Shaping new projects as they come in
  • Identifying production resource needs via meetings and the firm’s project management system
  • Establishing project timelines with the client
  • Keeping team members supplied with the information they need to deliver work that is on strategy and on deadline
  • Obtaining project approval and sign-off for any new recommendations on existing accounts
  • Checking that creative projects meet strategic guidelines provided
  • Affirming all billing information is recorded and associated with the appropriate projects
  • Starting conversations with clients concerning additional NSM offerings, passing along
  • leads to Development Team where appropriate
  • Above all, monitoring the health of the client relationship and keeping them informed

  • Websites: new sites, revamped sites, custom programming, website edits, content

  • Search engine optimization writing (no technical SEO programming knowledge required)● Information packets: brochures, pocket folders, cut sheets, etc.
  • Direct mail pieces: postcards, letters, coupons, invitations
  • Client promotion: speeches, email blasts, newsletters, banners
  • Public relations: press releases, public service announcements, email and letter notices
  • Advertising: print ads, radio spots, TV spots, web banners, billboards
  • Proposal development: reviewing proposals and project summaries
  • Marketing plan facilitation: outlining major deliverables for internal and external use
  • Social media: setup, writing projects
